Community Financial wraps up its Summer of Sharing campaign having donated $65,000 to area charities

Community Financial Credit Union wrapped up its sixth annual Summer of Sharing program where it donated $65,000 to 65 charities throughout northern and southeast Michigan.

Since starting the program in 2011, Community Financial has donated more than $365,000 to local groups nominated by members of the community. The $65,000 figure this year is in honor of Community Financial’s 65th anniversary. Community Financial donated $1,000 a day, for 65 days during the summer months.

One of many organizations that received financial support from Summer of Sharing is Giving Hope, an organization that raises awareness about the challenges of women and families in local communities. Serving parts of Wayne and Washtenaw counties, the organization encourages gardening in home, school, and community settings. It also manages the Ypsilanti Farmers Markets and runs a Mobile Farm Stand to bring healthy food into low-access areas.

“This funding has supported our mission of improving lives and communities through gardening and healthy food access,” said Tanya Edwards, who oversees development and marketing for Growing Hope. “It helps us to further advocate for policy change to promote healthy living in schools, families and communities.”

Community Financial President and CEO Bill Lawton shared that the Summer of Sharing program has created a tradition among team members and the community in general. “As a community focused organization, we recognize the importance of helping local groups build stronger communities” Lawton said. “Nominations increase each year and we continue to see stories from groups we’ve helped throughout the past 6 years, as well as learn about new organizations out there helping our neighbors.”

While the 2016 Summer of Sharing season is over, the giving doesn’t end there. Community Financial will support its local communities in the fall with its Community Shares program and in the winter with the Warming Hearts & Homes campaign.
